Two Brazilian fintechs are redefining what it means to send Pix via WhatsApp. PicPay, with 57 million accounts, launched an assistant that interprets audio, images, and text messages, with biometric authentication on 100% of transactions. BTG Pactual went further: its virtual assistant interprets even handwritten notes to extract transaction data.

Together, these cases demonstrate that the future of WhatsApp payments is multimodal — not just text, but voice, image, and whatever format the user prefers.

The Challenge

Digital payments via WhatsApp face two simultaneous challenges: usability and security. On one hand, users want to send Pix in the most natural way possible — sending a voice message, taking a photo of a document, or writing a value on paper. On the other, financial transactions require robust authentication and zero margin for error.

PicPay needed to scale to 57 million accounts with security. BTG needed to differentiate its premium digital banking experience with real UX innovation.

Two Multimodal Approaches

PicPay — Multimodal AI with 100% Biometrics: PicPay Assistant, launched in partnership with Meta and Microsoft, uses GPT-4.1 to interpret text messages, audio, and images on WhatsApp. The system processes Pix transactions and automatically splits group expenses. Each transaction requires biometric authentication, ensuring security on 100% of operations.

BTG Pactual — Pix by Handwriting: BTG's virtual assistant, launched in January 2025, goes beyond text and voice: it interprets handwritten notes. A customer can photograph a paper with handwritten values and the system extracts the data to process the Pix. It also accepts document images to identify values and automatically splits bills.

Both operate on WhatsApp as a native channel, transforming the messaging app into a complete financial platform.

Results and Impact

**PicPay:** 57 million accounts eligible for gradual rollout, 5 million unique users served in one year (AI support), biometric authentication on 100% of transactions. Described as "one of the companies that most integrates GenAI" with Brazilians.

BTG Pactual: Awarded for banking service innovation, R$500/day transaction limit (adjustable by profile), unique capability to interpret text, voice, images, and handwriting.

The impact goes beyond metrics: these cases show that WhatsApp is evolving from a text channel to a multimodal platform. The ability to process any input format — voice, photo, handwriting — removes the last friction between intent and financial action.
