While Brazilian banks lead conversational AI adoption in Latin America, a global panorama reveals the revolution is planetary. From Singapore to India, from South Africa to Southeast Asia, banks are transforming customer service with AI on WhatsApp and other conversational channels.

Three cases stand out for their scale and innovation: DBS Bank from Singapore with Joy GenAI, HDFC Bank from India with the EVA chatbot (India's largest), and Absa Bank from South Africa with Abby, Africa's first agentic AI banking agent.

The Global Challenge

Banks in emerging markets face amplified challenges: massive populations (India with 1.4 billion people), uneven digital infrastructure, multiple languages and time zones, and growing expectations for digital service.

DBS Bank needed to serve corporate clients 24/7 across multiple Asian markets. HDFC Bank, India's second-largest private bank, received millions of product and service queries. Absa Bank operates in 8 African countries with different languages and regulations.

Three Approaches, Three Continents

DBS Joy — Singapore (GenAI for Corporates): DBS launched "DBS Joy," a GenAI virtual assistant focused on corporate clients (SMEs). With 24/7 access for banking queries and Salesforce integration, Joy also operates on WhatsApp for equity services in Hong Kong and the US — quotes, alerts, reports, and watchlists.

HDFC EVA — India (The Country's Largest Chatbot): EVA (Electronic Virtual Assistant) has operated since 2017 on the website, app, WhatsApp, Google Assistant, and Facebook Messenger. It answers questions about products, rates, IFSC codes, and application processes. It became India's largest chatbot by volume, with 2.7 million queries in its first 6 months.

Absa Abby — South Africa (Pioneer Agentic AI): Absa was the first financial institution in Africa to deploy agentic AI for customers. Abby operates on the website and WhatsApp in 8 countries (Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, and others), using Salesforce Agentforce. It can help apply for loans, open investment accounts, and make international payments.

Results and Impact

**DBS Joy:** 120k+ unique chats since February 2025, ~4k corporate clients per month, +23% improvement in customer satisfaction, reduction in average handling time. Expanding from Singapore to Hong Kong and India.

HDFC EVA: 2.7 million queries in the first 6 months, 85%+ accuracy, 99.9% uptime, response time in seconds (vs 8-10 minutes with humans). India's largest chatbot by volume.

Absa Abby: 10k+ customer interactions per day, operates in 8 countries, first African bank with agentic AI. Expanding support for Portuguese and Swahili.

The pattern is clear: banks in emerging markets are using AI not just for efficiency, but for financial inclusion — reaching populations that previously lacked access to personalized banking services.
